Appalachian Trail & New England Camping & Hiking

10 nights

Hike a small part of one of America’s best loved and most famous trails - the 2190 mile Appallachian Trail - and explore some of the beauties of New England.  Renowned for its fall colour, New England is  beautiful at all times of the year from the fresh greens of spring to the reds and golds of autumn. You will hike along woodland valleys and undisturbed forests as you explore the glories of Acadia National Park and the White Mountains.

Topped and tailed with a stay in historic Boston and with a choice of either camping or staying in two to three star hotels, there is really no excuse for not taking this holiday! You will be accompanied by two guides to ensure that different walking speeds can be catered for.

Dates for both trips are fixed between July and October with the autumn dates selling out very fast so please do contact us soon.

Day 4-6

Stowe to White Mountains National Forest

Over the next two days you will walk the backbone of the Northern Appalachians, the beautiful White Mountains of New Hampshire. Many of the trails here are above the timberline offering wonderful views of this impressive range. On arrival you will delve straight into the beauty of this area with a planned hike to Lonesome Lake. Most of the trail is covered and will be shaded from the sun, making it even more of an enjoyable experience.

You will also have the opportunity to enjoy the Franconia Ridge Hike that starts right at your campsite. You will get to scale the three peaks of Little Haystack, Mount Lincoln and Mount Lafayette, all of which offer spectacular views on one of New England’s best rated hikes. You could also catch the Cannon Mountain Aerial Tramway, which began operation in 1938 and was the first passenger aerial tramway in North America.

Two nights camping in the White Mountains National Forest.

Day 6-8

White Mountains National Forest to Baxter State Park

Baxter State Park is home to Mount Katahdin, the finishing point of the 2200 miles long Appalachian Trail. Wander through and enjoy some of the most remote wilderness in the eastern United States. Keep both eyes and ears open for the chance meeting with some of the wildlife that flourishes here. This tranquil wilderness is virtually untouched since the days of the first settlers, over three hundred years ago.

There are two hiking options with varying difficulty; the first is Mount Katahdin (Baxter Peak) which is a strenuous hike with more than 4,150 ft. elevation that takes approximately 10 hours. The rewarding views on this trail are some of the finest in New England however, should only be attempted by those fit enough. The second option is to Daicey and Kidney Pond, an easy to moderate walk with little to no elevation difference. Canoes can be rented after a couple of miles or you can simply sit back and admire the views.

Two nights camping in Baxter State Park.

Towns such as Bar Harbor blend with Acadia National Park creating a unique mix of pristine landscapes. Acadia National Park has about 125 miles of hiking trails which are often interconnected and range in difficulty from easy to strenuous.

The unsurpassed scenic Ocean Path Trail meanders in a southerly direction along the eastern shore of Mount Desert Island until it arrives at Otter Cliff and Otter Point with numerous points to stop for the perfect picture. For those not wanting to hike today you can try one of the optional excursions this area is so well known for such as sea kayaking or deep-sea fishing.

You can also walk one of Acadia's most beautiful hiking trails, the Acadia Mountain Trail. The walk is moderate to strenuous with a tough scramble up to some spectacular views of Somes Sound, Echo Lake, the Gulf of Maine, the Cranberry Isles and the surrounding mountains and ocean.
