Why should I visit Charleston?
Fort Sumter National Monument denotes the spot where the first shots of the American Civil War were fired in 1861 when the Confederate artillery opened fire in such good spirits on this Federal fort in Charleston Harbour.
Charleston’s Downtown, perched on a peninsula shaped by the Ashley and Cooper rivers, is full of classic Georgia, Federal, Adamesque, Greek Revival, Italianate houses best explored either on foot or by horse-drawn carriage who drivers are very well informed. You can visit private 18th century homes amongst spring blooms during the Festival of Houses and Gardens (March-April); visit the Charleston City Market (one of the oldest in the nation) for locally made goods.
Food! - All of the Lowcountry is renowned for its food, not just shrimp and grits which is a staple, but deliciously spiced fish of all kinds. Whether you are watching the sunset with a bucket of steamed oysters at the very casual Bowens Island Restaurant or eating in style at the Charleston Grill, you are in for a treat.
The glorious plantation homes such as Middleton Place and Drayton Hall. There are several fantastic houses and gardens within easy reach of Charleston. Frontier America can arrange a tour for you but we would recommend that you take your own car to allow yourself as much time as you want to enjoy not only the sense of history, but the gardens and buildings.
TIP - Allow plenty of time as the houses are only open to guided tours at set times; you need to plan carefully and prebook at least the first one.
TIP - Charleston is pretty hot and humid in high summer. If you can travel in spring and autumn, you will be more comfortable.
