The spirit of the West is alive and well in the high desert of Eastern Oregon, where snow-capped mountains, dusty plains and jagged red rocks look down on rolling hills of sage, wild rivers and fertile wheat fields. The Sumpter Valley Vintage train runs through the heart of the gold mining country and one of the All America Roads, the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway, is a wonderful drive.

Why should I visit Eastern Oregon?
The colourful rock formations at John Day Fossil Beds near Mitchell preserve a world class record of plant and animal evolution, changing climate, and past ecosystems that span over 40 million years. There are three units, the Clarno, Painted Hills and Sheep Hill which includes a working lab at the Thomas Condon Paleontology Centre. Scenic drives and hikes at all three units allow you to explore the prehistoric past of Oregon and see science in action.
Visit Pendelton Woollen Mills Factory to explore the tunnels created in the 1800s. The factory was known worldwide as a maker of fine Indian trading blankets and men's check shirts but other things and less legal activities went on below ground.
The entertaining and knowledgeable guides take you on a ninety minute journey through several decades of discrimination, skullduggery, prostitution and gambling.
