Los Angeles Downtown

One of the most recognisable skylines in the world thanks to the circular US Bank Tower skyscraper – California’s tallest building, memorably blown up by an alien spaceship in the movie, Independence Day and now home to the OUE Skyspace LA open-air observation deck with 360 degree views of the city – the centre of Los Angeles is often overlooked by visitors. However, it is well worth exploring for its cultural institutions such as the striking Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall and the contemporary building that is the Broad Museum the 100-block Fashion District and Spanish colonial-style Union Station, the last of America’s great railway stations, as well as hidden delights including America’s largest collection of historic movie theatres along Broadway, several now housing jewellery and herb stores.
