Northern California
The northernmost part of California is where state capital Sacramento is located, along with water and mountain playground Lake Tahoe. It is also a vast area of mountains and forests, encompassing both the Cascade Range and the High Sierra, that stretch up to the Oregon border and across to the Nevada state line. The least populated and most pristine area of California, the Shasta Lakes offers a peaceful escape far from the madding crowds of cities and theme parks to the south, as well as a wealth of adventure and activities.

Why should I visit Northern California?
There’s gold in them thar hills – or at least, there was. This is where the discovery of gold in 1848 led to the Gold Rush of 1849. Towns sprang overnight up throughout the region, including Sacramento which served as a key supply centre for the treasure-seeking ‘49ers. Most disappeared as the gold ran out, leaving the few ghost towns that remain today.
Rent a house boat on the Shasta Lakes.
Visit the geysers and mudpots at Lassen Volcanic National Park.
TIP Take a gondola to the top of Mammoth Mountain and learn about northern California’s volcanoes at its $1.5 million interpretive centre.
TIP Snow closes sections of scenic High Sierra byways such as Ebbetts Pass, south of Lake Tahoe, from mid-November until the snow melts – generally in May but occasionally as late as July.
