A glamorous desert escape in the Coachella Valley, Palm Springs has been a magnet for Hollywood film stars and other celebrities since the 1920s. Among those who bought homes there were Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bob Hope, Cary Grant and George Hamilton. Others including Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor were frequent visitors while Elvis and Priscilla Presley honeymooned there. Palm Springs even has its own Walk of Stars downtown, honouring famous visitors and residents. The Palm Springs International Film Festival each January attracts today’s stars.

Why should I visit Palm Springs?
The Parker Palm Springs resort was once Gene Autry’s Melody Ranch and is set amid 13 acres of landscaped gardens. Its Norma’s restaurant offers diners a Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata breakfast with lobster and 10oz of sevruga caviar – for $1,000!
The city is a leisure hotspot boasting luxury resorts, high class shopping and more than 120 golf courses. Popular with artists since the 1800s, it also has many galleries. Beyond Palm Springs are oases in the Coachella Valley Preserve and Indian Canyons.
Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Ascending from the desert floor to its upper terminal, 8,500 feet up in the forested San Jacinto State Park, it is the world’s largest rotating gondola system.
Backstreet Art District Aacclaimed as the “coolest, hippest art district in the desert”, free art walks on the first Wednesday of every month visit a dozen artists’ galleries and working studios.
Joshua Tree National Park Named for the strangely-shaped trees that are dotted throughout the park, it also has rock outcrops that are popular with climbers.
TIP Desert town Indio hosts the three-day Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival – simply known as Coachella – each April, drawing up to 50,000 people each day for top acts that have included the likes of Madonna, Coldplay and Paul McCartney. Accommodation in the area is at a premium then.
