Redwood National Park

Preserving the world’s largest contiguous coastal redwood forest, the park comprises a ribbon of mountains skirting the Pacific half way between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon and is the surviving remnant of an ancient forest that once covered much of the West Coast. Here you can find some of the tallest trees on earth, growing right up to the ocean edge and up to 370 feet tall. One of just two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in California, the fact that it was listed four years before Yosemite underlines its global significance. It is also an International Biosphere Reserve.

Why should I visit Redwood National Park?

Several rivers have carved deep gorges through the forested landscape, and the park is rich in fauna. Wildlife you might encounter includes black bears, elk, chipmunks, bobcats, snakes and bald eagles, while whales and dolphins are commonly seen in the ocean beyond its craggy cliffs and desolate beaches. Unlike other national parks, Redwood is free to drive through.

Fern Canyon  Step into a lush fairyland of fern-festooned walls on the short hike through this narrow canyon.

Coastal Drive  See some of the park’s most spectacular scenery on this part-paved, nine-mile loop alongside the Pacific and rushing Klamath River.

Enderts Beach  Kids will love exploring the tide pools of this wild beach, full of starfish, anemones and myriad marine life.

TIP  Check before embarking on a drive on coastal roads, as landslides sometimes cause road closures.
