Inside The Desert
The south-west corner of California takes in vast expanses of desert as well as resort communities that have long attracted the rich and famous. Among desert areas are Death Valley National Park the Mojave National Preserve, Joshua Tree National Park and Anza-Borrego State Park.
They are far from barren, however; an amazing 60 mammal species and 225 bird species survive in the Anza-Borrego park. The deserts also have everything from salt flats, dunes, rock formations and canyons to springs, oases and wild flowers.
Why should I visit The Desert?
Set amongst the desert landscape, resort communities such as Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City and Indian Wells provide man-made oases offering luxurious spa resorts, golf, dining, art, theatre and shopping.
In the Mojave Desert town of Baker, the world’s tallest thermometer stands 134 feet high. A nearby desert settlement is called Zzyzx.
TIP Driving off-road in protected desert areas is prohibited, and could invalidate car rental insurance.
TIP Ensure you are well-equipped with water and food if you venture into desert areas, and tell someone of your plans. Stay with your car in the event of a breakdown.
