Yosemite National Park

One of the gems of the US National Park system; moves to protect it date back 150 years when a bill making the valley and a grove of giant sequoias a public trust was signed by President Abraham Lincoln. It became a national park in 1890 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. The great outdoors doesn’t come much greater than Yosemite. Among the main attractions are Yosemite Falls, the soaring redwoods, the giant sequoias and the dramatic granite monoliths such as the Half Dome and El Capitan.

Frontier America recommends at least 3 nights in the area which will allow you time to at least scratch the surface of this amazing park You can also rent bikes and of course hiking is always a good option.

Why should I visit Yosemite National Park?

One of the joys of visiting Yosemite is viewing its wonderful wildlife including its abundant black bears. But however cute the bear cubs look, keep your distance as the mother bears are very protective, extremely powerful and surprisingly fast. As many as 500 “human-bear interactions” are recorded in Yosemite every year, some involving serious injuries.

America’s third most-visited national park, almost four million people visit it each year so its roads get crowded in high summer. Use the free shuttle “train” within Yosemite Valley to enjoy the sights with commentary and avoid the hassle of finding parking spots.

Ansel Adams, a superb photographer from the early 1900s, has a gallery near the Visitor Centre from where you can also take one of the many excellent bus tours around the park. We recommend these as parking in the park can be challenging and trying to enjoy the scenery whilst driving around a hairpin bend is not a good idea.

Yosemite Falls - The tallest waterfall in North America, it is also the world’s fifth-tallest with a total drop of 2,425 feet.

Half Dome and El Capitan - The two most well-known of Yosemite’s towering mountains, their sheer faces were carved out by glaciers and are popular with rock climbers.

Giant sequoias - There are 700 of these ancient trees growing in three Yosemite groves: Mariposa Grove, Tuolumne Grove and Merced Grove.

TIP  Hotel accommodation inside the park is limited and needs to be booked well in advance. Alternatively, stay just outside and drive in or take the YARTS (Yosemite Area Regional Transportation System) shuttle service into the park.
