Atlanta to New Orleans Follow the Music Trail

16 nights

Set the radio volume to high and prepare to sing along as you drive the musical highway as your Deep South fly-drive holiday takes you through the lands of country music and blues to jazz and beyond.  Listen to Johnny Cash, visit the home of Elvis and sit in a bar in New Orleans listening to a jazz band.  With direct flights from London to both Atlanta and New Orleans, there is no need to retrace your steps on this one-way fly drive holiday through the Southern States which can be driven in either direction.

The Breakdown

Here's a day-by-day guide to your itinerary. Feel free to ask us to add other days or ideas and excursions by adding them to your wishlist, so we can give you the best price.

Day 1

Your American fly-drive holiday starts without a car as you do not need one in Atlanta with its excellent transport network.  You will be met at the airport and transferred to your chosen Atlanta hotel for two nights to explore the land of Coca Cola, take in a show at the Fox theatre where so many famous acts have been and film history made or join in a movie tour of Gone with the Wind, the Hunger Games or Walking Dead.  All are associated with Atlanta.
2 nights Atlanta

Day 3

Atlanta to Chattanooga

Collect your car and drive off to the land of Chattanooga Choo Choo. Spend the night in a train carriage, explore the city.  The aquarium is fantastic, see the digital panoramic of the American Civil War Chattanooga battle at Lookout Mountain and the Ruby Falls.
1 night Chattanooga

Day 4

Chattanooga to Nashville

Nashville beckons!  Frontier America recommends you spend at least three nights in Nashville to be able to appreciate The Music City.  Greats, past and present, have performed here; visit the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Ryman, Studio B, the Grand Opry and then relax in any number of bars and restaurants where you will hear the stars of the future performing.

4 nights Nashville

TIP - Ask Frontier America to book you a private tour of Music City accompanied by a  working singer / songwriter

Day 8

Nashville to Alabama

Today is Alabama day.  You will be heading towards Tuscumbia where so many artists have made recordings.  On the way, you might like to stop in Huntsville for the US Space & Rocket Centre, the birthplace of the American Space programme.  Tuscumbia is composed of four towns and you will have the chance to visit the FAME recording studios, Muscle Shoals Studios, the home of WC Handy, the “Father of the Blues”. You will probably see studios in use and definitely see the equipment used by such greats as the Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart.
2 nights Tuscumbia

Day 10

Alabama to Memphis

Back into Tennessee and to Memphis.  Again we suggest three nights so that you can enjoy Graceland, home of Elvis recently redeveloped to better show off the King’s cars and home where you will probably spend most of a day.  You will also want to visit the Sun Studio, the Stax Museum of Soul Music and the National Civil Rights Museum.  You will definitely want to walk down Beale Street, known as the Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll and visit the Memphis Music Hall of Fame.
3 nights Memphis

Day 13

Memphis to Greenville

En route to the land of cotton and Greenville, known for its Blues Music with such artists as B.B. King, Ike and Tina Turner, you must stop at the birthplace of the king:  Elvis was born in Tupelo Mississippi. In Greenville, you might want to visit the Highway 61 Blues Museum and hit the Walnut Street Blues Bar.
1 night Greenville

Day 14

Greenville to New Orleans

Your final day in the car take you through historic Vicksburg and Natchez where you can see some of the beautiful plantation homes before the jazz of New Orleans threatens to swamp your senses.

Allow three nights to enjoy not only the music and the food, but also take time for a cruise on a Mississippi River sternwheeler (perhaps dinner with a live band?), a tour down River Road to see some of the magnificent plantation homes and trip on an AirBoat through the swamps to see alligators up close and personal.
3 nights New Orleans

Day 17

New Orleans

The holiday ends and it is time to start the journey home or perhaps extend it with a Mississippi River Cruise
