Your arrival in Atlanta begins your trip to some of the south's most iconic homes. You'll start with a visit to the Margaret Mitchell House. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the house is a turn-of-the-century three-story Tudor Revival building where Mitchell lived and wrote her Pulitzer Prize winning novel, Gone with the Wind. You'll also want to visit Swan House, known as one of the most recognized and photographed landmarks in Atlanta. Elegant and classically styled, this mansion was built in 1928 and provides a glimpse into the lifestyle of a prominent Atlanta family during the 1920s and 1930s. Explore the many rooms of this beautifully restored historic house and enjoy garens, fountains and breathtaking views on the Swan House grounds.

Atlanta to Macon
Collect your car to drive some of the Antebellum Trail. This is a 100 mile route through seven historic communities that escaped major harm from Sherman's 1864 burning March to the Sea. You will spend the night in a historic house in Macon, but on the way you will be able to visit the Old Governor's Mansion in Milledgeville and the beautiful homes of Madison.

Macon to Golden Isles & the Atlantic Coast
Continue your drive to the Georgia coast to the region known as the Golden Isles. On Jekyll Island, as well as a glorious beach, you will be able to tour the area simply known as Millionaire's Row. During the Gilded Age, Jekyll Island was one of the most exclusive resort destinations in the United States. Owned by the most elite and inacessible social club in America, a group whose members included Rockefellers, Pulitzers, Vanderbilts, Goulds and Morgans, this quiet refuge was the perfect winter getaway for the wealthy new industrial class of the snowbound North.

A short trip up the coast takes you to Savannah, home of the largest urban historic district in the United States. The city is teeming with historic mansions, fondly known as museum homes. You'll want to visit the Owens-Thomas House, known for its amazing Greek revival style. There's also the Isaiah Davenport House, built in the Federal style and where the city's historic preservation movement began, and the Juliette Gordon Low birthplace, home of the founder of the Girl Guides and filled with her artwork and sculptures. You can also find the Green-Meldrim House, headquarters of General Sherman during the Civil War, and the Mercer-Williams House, the site of the murder featured in the iconic Savannah murder mystery, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The city offers many options for sightseeing as well as architecture-specific tours. Just two hours north of Savannah is Charleston, South Carolina, another gem situated on the Southeastern US coast. It's a city brimming with rich history, tradition and Southern charm. Known for its magnificent outlying plantations, you'll see Middleton Place, built in 1755 and featuring America's oldest landscaped gardens. There's also Magnolia Plantation. Founded in 1676 it has survived the centuries and witnessed the history of America unfold from the American Revolution through the Civil War and beyond. It's the oldest public gardens in America, opening its doors to visitors in 1870 to display the thousands of beautiful flowers and plants in its famous gardens. There's also Drayton Hall and Boone Hall plantations, as well as several mansions in the historic district that can be toured and enjoyed.
