The History of Las Vegas

The fact that Las Vegas exists at all is remarkable created as it is in the middle of a desert. Way back in 1829, the Las Vegas valley, then in Mexico, was discovered by Mexicans trying to establish a trading route to Los Angeles. There was apparently a small creek running through the valley which made a good resupply point which they named Las Vegas which is Spanish for The Meadows. Mormon missionaries followed, then the Railroad, but it was the building of the Hoover Dam in 1935 that really changed the city. 25,000 workers with nothing to do in the evening in a State where gambling was permitted, the mobsters and crime moved in and Las Vegas flourished in a fairly seedy way.  All changed when Howard Hughes moved into the Desert Inn in 1966 and refused to move out of his room when requested.  Instead, he bought not only the Desert Inn but many of the other hotels spending $300 million in the process. Since 1989 Las Vegas has grown and flourished with top class hotels vying for luxury and outrageous architecture.  To walk down the strip is to pass Venice, Paris, New York all within a block.
