Start the holiday with a couple of nights in Atlanta which will give you time to explore the city. You might like to visit the World of Coca Cola, the Centennial Olympic Park or perhaps the lavish Swan House built in 1928 for the Inman family and used for the Hunger Games. For old movie buffs, there is also the Gone with Wind Tour and Margaret Mitchell’s house to be visited.
2 nights Atlanta
Atlanta to Madison
Collect your car from downtown and start the fly-drive part of your holiday. First stop should be Covington where you will find Twelve Oaks, said to be a model for Ashley’s home in the Gone with the Wind and a beautiful home. More recently, it has been the location of the Dukes of Hazzard. You will spend the night in Madison, a charming and picturesque small town with a good array of local shops, antique dealers, several museums, Antebellum and Victorian homes one of which will be your home for the night. If you prefer staying in the countryside, you might consider the Southern Cross Ranch just outside the town.
1 night Madison
Madison to Macon
You are now on the Antebellum Trail and you should stop in Milledgeville to tour the Old State Capitol Building, the Old Governor’s Mansion as well as the beautiful Lockerly Hall and Arboretum. You will spend the night in Macon where there is an interesting African American museum and a historic downtown area.
1 night Macon
Macon to Jekyll Island
A 250 mile drive will take you to the charming Jekyll Island, a State Park, where you will spend 3 nights to relax and enjoy the Jekyll Island Club once home to many of America’s richest families. Whilst there you might like to visit the Georgia Sea Turtle Centre, Driftwood beach, the Jekyll Island Museum or try one of the other barrier islands that make up the Golden Isles.
3 nights Golden Isles
Jekyll Island to Savannah
Leaving the tranquillity of Jekyll, you might like to stop at Brunswick, the world shrimp capital with a bustling waterfront and attractive Victorian homes on your way to Savannah, the oldest city in Georgia. Be sure to arrive in time for a beverage on the River Walk to watch the extraordinary variety of water craft ranging from the very small to the simply enormous! Take a sternwheeler cruise and explore some of the 22 historic squares. Frontier America will include a 2-hour walking tour with local legend Savannah Dan. What he does not know about Savannah is not worth knowing.
2 nights Savannah
From one major seaport to another. This time Charleston, South Carolina. Full of cobblestone streets, glorious and elegant buildings especially in the French Quarter and Battery districts. Do take a horse-drawn carriage; their drivers are very well informed and it is much more comfortable than walking! Visit the City Jail if you dare, Fort Sumter where the first shots which started the Civil War were fired or take a Schooner tour around the harbour. We would recommend you spend one day in the city and your second exploring some of the beautiful plantations just 40 minutes or so outside the city such as Middleton Place or the Magnolia Plantation.
3 nights CharlestonClose
Charleston to Camden
Leave Charleston and head inland perhaps stopping at Congaree National Park, a preserved track of hardwood forest en route for Camden, once the economic and cultural centre of the “backcountry”. Camden was the principle supply post for all the British operations in the south. “Historic Camden” is a 107 acre outdoor museum with a fascinating collection of buildings from the Colonial and American Revolutionary War period.
1 night Camden
Camden to Biltmore
Leaving Camden behind, you will drive through the rolling hills of South Carolina’s wine country, stopping perhaps to admire the Opera House in Newberry before arriving at Spartanburg to visit the futuristic Zentrum BMW museum. As well as the museum, there is a chance to take a driving lesson like no other at the BMW Performance Driving School. Your day finishes at Biltmore, America’s largest home. With just 250 rooms, George Vanderbilt’s Chateau is an impressive building which, together with its gardens are open to the public. Extraordinary artwork with works by Renoir and John Singer Sargent amongst others, a 10,000 volume library, a Banquet Hall with a 70-foot ceiling, furniture, clothing and accessories all from the Vanderbilt family.
1 night at the Inn at BiltmoreClose
Biltmore to North Georgia
Today you will drive the last few miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway. This extraordinary road, itself a National Park and built during the 1930’s recession, connects the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia with the Great Smoky National Park in North Carolina. Designated an “All-American” road, it is undoubtedly one of the world’s best drives. You will be driving through the mountain village of Clayton, once the convergence point for several Cherokee trails, where you might like to stop at one of the wine tasting rooms before going to your home for the night which could either be the delightful Lucille’s Mountain Top Inn & Spa or the more rustic Amicalola Falls Lodge. Either will give you the chance to explore some of the North Georgia mountains, the wine district and Dahlonega, the site of the first gold rush in America.
2 nights North GeorgiaClose
