The Musical Highway Music Cities of the Deep South

Music all the way is the theme for this American fly-drive holiday.  The highlights will be Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans but there are a few other surprises en route too. Enjoy not only the music but a bit of Civil Rights history and some relics of the American Civil War.

The Blues Highway (route 61) is one of the most famous driving routes in America.

Nashville

Arriving into Nashville, go to your downtown hotel, drop your cases and head into the streets to get your first feel of the Music City. Pop into a bar to hear a live band, relax and let the stresses of the journey melt away.

 

During your three night stay, you will have time to visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the Historic RCA Studio B and the Ryman Auditorium.

Day 2

Nashville

Nashville Visit the main sites such as Ryman Auditorium and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Historic RCA Studio B and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum which covers all genres of music. If you are in Nashville over a weekend, be sure to get Frontier America to get you tickets for a performance at the Grand Ole Opry.

TIP - Ask Frontier America to book you a private tour with a working songwriter / musician.  You will get a unique insight into the working of Music City.

Day 5

Nashville to Memphis

Leave the Music City for another musical legend: Memphis.  Grab some ribs from Rendezvous before strolling down Beale Street.  You are in Memphis for three nights which will give you time to visit the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum, the Sun Studio, the Stax Museum of American Soul Museum and, of course, Graceland. Away from the music scene, you might also want to see the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, scene of the murder of Martin Luther King Jr.

Day 8

Memphis to The Shoals

Today you will head for the Shoals, a conglomeration of four small towns with a huge reputation.  Visit the Muscle Shoals Visit FAME Studios and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio which between them have hosted dozens of famous musicians including the Stones and Rod Stewart. You can also see the inspirational Helen Keller’s Birthplace.

The Shoals to Mobile

En route to Mobile, stop in Birmingham, Alabama where one of the most influential movements of the Civil Rights campaigns was launched and then lunch at Dreamland in  Tuscaloosa, known to be one the best barbeque restaurants in the South.

Day 10

Mobile to New Orleans

Walk Mobile’s historic downtown, explore the battlegrounds of Forts Morgan, Gaines and Condé, tour the USS Alabama Battleship, or follow the black history trail complete with an Underground Railroad bike tour before driving to New Orleans for the last three nights of your holiday.  Drop the car off as you will not need it in New Orleans.

New Orleans

You will have two full days to explore New Orleans.  With a spooky history, and unique, ornate tombs, Lafayette Cemetery is a popular location for movies shot in New Orleans. Or choose to take an exciting swamp airboat tour to see alligators, pelicans, osprey. Have your pick of music venues, from dueling pianos, to smooth blues and funky jazz clubs in the atmospheric French Quarter.
